8 YouTube Channels Worth Following
The best and worst thing about YouTube or any content platform is that virtually anyone can participate. Creators that would never have had a chance in the era of mainstream content distribution can now build a significant following. But you have to sift through endless piles of shit to find those rare gems.
I am particularly exhausted by the never-ending stream of self-proclaimed experts bombarding us with advice on any given topic. No more advice, please. But keep the helpful tutorials and how-to videos coming. Those come in handy whenever I need to make a minor home or auto repair.
It’s far too easy to waste several hours hypnotized by absolutely absurd bullshit on any given platform, and YouTube’s algorithm delivers an endless supply of visual fast food that provides just enough dopamine to keep you coming back.
Here are eight YouTube channels that are actually worth watching:
I’m not Norm
A repository of clips of legendary comedian Norm Macdonald’s appearances, interviews, and standup comedy. Insanely extensive. Always good for a laugh and frequently updated.
Nacho Video
The elusive Nacho is a music fan with a gift for recycling, re-editing, repurposing, restoring, and remastering archived music videos and performances. The channel is heavy on David Bowie, but it features many other interesting artists. If your musical tastes veer toward alternative, new wave, or art rock, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the wealth of rare material here.
Randy Charles Johnson
Randy is the real deal. His videos are generally short and to the point. Most content creators should take a cue from Randy, because almost all videos could benefit from being shorter. The random nature of the topics Randy chooses to explore is baffling and always makes for a pleasant surprise when a new video drops.
Nemo’s Dreamscapes
This is like an extremely sophisticated variation on the television yule log. Nemo combines oldies from almost 100 years ago with soothing sounds of nature and domestic ambiance with subtly animated visuals. It’s a great way to daydream or fall asleep.
Real Coffee with Scott Adams
Scott often has the most intelligent and thought-provoking takes on the latest headlines and hot topics. He is the creator of the popular Dilbert comic and a bestselling author. He broadcasts live every single day on YouTube (and other platforms). Want to get out of your news silo and look at the world through a new lens? Tune in!
The Why Files
For anyone interested in the paranormal, this is an essential channel. High production values, a healthy dose of humor, and lots of deep dives into the strange and fantastic. Always a welcome escape from the daily grind.
Buddhist Society of Western Australia
The monks from the Buddhist Society of Western Australia give extraordinary dharma talks that go a long way in soothing the mind, body, and soul. Ajahan Brahm’s talks are particularly great.
